About
Xiaoxiao Yang is an emerging researcher at the forefront of surgical robotics and autonomous endoscopic systems, with a particular focus on gastrointestinal endoscopic surgery and minimally invasive intervention. Her work addresses one of medicine's most technically demanding challenges: developing instruments small and flexible enough to navigate the narrow, tortuous pathways of the human gastrointestinal tract while maintaining the dexterity required for complex procedures like endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). Yang's most influential contribution — a transendoscopic flexible parallel continuum robotic mechanism enabling bimanual ESD — has garnered 45 citations since 2023, reflecting rapid uptake within the surgical robotics community. Complementing her hardware innovations, she has pioneered intelligent endoscope control through her SAVAnet framework (17 citations), which leverages surgeons' visual attention patterns and surgical action recognition to automate endoscope guidance. Her development of GESRsim, a dedicated surgical robot simulator, further demonstrates her commitment to training infrastructure for next-generation autonomous systems. Most recently, her CoPESD dataset advances the integration of large vision-language models into surgical co-piloting. Together, these contributions position Yang as a distinctive voice bridging precision robotic design, surgical AI, and clinical translation in gastrointestinal endoscopy.
