About

Wenming Xi is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of robotics and biomedical engineering, with key contributions in robotic cell manipulation, microforce sensing, and tactile material recognition. His work has fundamentally advanced the automation of delicate biological procedures, particularly in cell microinjection—a critical technique for genetic modification and drug delivery. Xi developed a novel microforce sensor array platform that enables real-time force measurement during robotic microinjection, overcoming the limitations of conventional probe-type sensors (33 citations). He also engineered an adaptive visual servoing system that automates cell autofocus and manipulation, significantly improving throughput and precision in biological workflows (11 citations). Beyond cellular applications, Xi’s human-touch-inspired tactile sensing method, which uses short-duration slide actions combined with machine learning, achieved robust material recognition for robotic hands (20 citations). His fabrication of a PDMS-based cell fixation device further streamlined automated microinjection by eliminating the need for single-cell handling. With his interdisciplinary approach spanning sensor design, computer vision, and soft robotics, Wenming Xi continues to shape the future of intelligent robotic systems for biomedical and industrial applications.
