Wenmin Qin’s research focuses on the remote sensing of aerosols, with a particular emphasis on improving satellite-based retrievals of aerosol optical depth (AOD), aerosol radiative forcing, and aerosol type classification. Her major contributions include the global validation and uncertainty analysis of high-resolution MODIS MAIAC and Collection 6.1 aerosol products, which are critical for climate and air quality studies. She has also developed advanced algorithms, such as an optimized artificial neural network for estimating daily AOD and aerosol radiative effects, and an improved Dark Target method for retrieving fine-mode AOD over land. Her work on AEROSA, a novel satellite-based aerosol classification scheme, enables the differentiation of desert dust, biomass-burning, and other aerosol types.
