About
Weijun Tong is a leading researcher in advanced optical fiber sensing, with a particular focus on distributed measurement technologies. His work centers on developing novel interrogation methods for fiber-optic sensors, notably through the use of phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (φ-OTDR) and specialized fiber designs. A major contribution is his pioneering demonstration of distributed twist sensing using frequency-scanning φ-OTDR in a spun fiber. By exploiting the unique helical structure of stress rods within the fiber, Tong showed that fiber twist induces measurable variations in the backscattered signal, enabling high-resolution, spatially continuous twist measurement—a capability previously challenging to achieve. This work, published in 2023 and garnering 7 citations, represents a significant step forward for structural health monitoring and robotics. Tong’s research bridges fundamental photonics with practical sensing applications, offering new tools for monitoring strain, temperature, and now twist in challenging environments. His innovative use of specialty fibers and frequency-domain techniques continues to shape the future of distributed optical fiber sensing.
