About
Weihua Qiu is a leading figure in the advancement of robotic surgery, with a particular focus on complex oncologic procedures. His work has been instrumental in defining the learning curves and optimizing outcomes for robot-assisted pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD), a technically demanding operation. In landmark studies from a high-volume pancreatic center, Qiu analyzed the learning curve across 450 RPD cases and demonstrated that, after the initial learning phase, the procedure yields superior short-term outcomes compared to the traditional open approach—a finding that has garnered over 120 citations. Beyond pancreatic surgery, Qiu has also pioneered robotic thyroidectomy via the bilateral axillo-breast approach, mapping the learning curve and identifying predictive factors for operative time across hundreds of cases. His research portfolio uniquely bridges clinical surgery and engineering, including foundational work on uncalibrated robotic hand-eye coordination using an extended state observer.
