About
Weihao Cai is a leading researcher in the field of bioinspired soft robotics and smart materials, with a particular focus on photoresponsive actuators and nanocomposites. His most notable contribution is the development of a fast-response, near-infrared (NIR) light-driven soft robot, reported in his highly cited 2022 paper (37 citations). This work introduced a novel nanocomposite combining liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), a high elastic form-stable phase change polymer (HEPCP), and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), enabling a unique two-stage deformation mechanism. By harnessing NIR light for remote, precise control, Cai’s design overcomes traditional limitations in actuation speed and complexity, paving the way for untethered, agile soft robots. His research has significant implications for applications in biomedical devices, flexible electronics, and adaptive systems. With his innovative approach to material synthesis and structural engineering, Cai continues to push the boundaries of stimuli-responsive materials, earning recognition for advancing the practical viability of soft robotics in real-world environments.
