About

Wei-Chun Jao is an astronomer whose work has reshaped our understanding of the solar neighborhood. His primary research focuses on stellar astrometry, binary star systems, and the precise characterization of nearby stars. Jao’s most impactful contribution is the “URAT South Parallax Results” (2018), which provided 916 trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions for newly discovered nearby stars using the United States Naval Observatory Robotic Astrometric Telescope. This foundational dataset, cited 22 times, has become a key resource for mapping the local stellar population. He also led “An Adaptive Optics Census of Companions to Northern Stars Within 25 pc with Robo-AO” (2022, 14 citations), surveying over 1,150 stars to uncover tight binary companions across all spectral types.
