Tim Maguire is a pioneer in medical robotics, with a focused research program on automating one of medicine’s most common yet error-prone procedures: venipuncture. His work addresses the critical challenge of difficult venous access, which is a leading cause of medical injury in the U.S. Maguire’s landmark 2013 paper, “Portable robot for autonomous venipuncture using 3D near infrared image guidance” (43 citations), introduced a novel system that combines 3D near-infrared imaging with robotic precision to locate and puncture veins autonomously, dramatically reducing reliance on clinician skill.
