About
Alvin Chen is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of robotics and interventional medicine, whose work focuses on developing autonomous and handheld robotic systems for vascular access procedures. His primary research areas include medical robotics, image-guided intervention, and autonomous venipuncture systems. Chen's most notable contribution is his seminal 2013 paper on a portable robot for autonomous venipuncture using 3D near-infrared image guidance, which has garnered 43 citations and addresses the critical challenge of medical injuries caused by difficult venous access—the leading cause of medical injury in the U.S. This work laid the foundation for robotic systems that can autonomously locate and access veins in patients with challenging physiology.
