Tiina Rasilainen is a materials scientist whose pioneering work on superhydrophobic polymer surfaces has reshaped our understanding of wettability and surface engineering. Her research focuses on creating controlled micro- and nanostructures on polyolefin substrates—particularly polypropylene—to achieve extreme water repellency and anisotropic wetting behavior. In her landmark 2007 study (134 citations), Rasilainen introduced a novel method combining electropolishing, micro-robotic structuring, and anodization to fabricate superhydrophobic polyolefin surfaces with precisely tailored micro- and nano-topographies. She further advanced the field by developing anisotropic surfaces with micropillar and hierarchical micropillar/nanobump arrays, enabling directional control over water droplet movement.
