About

Tiantong Xu is a rising leader in micro-robotics, specializing in the design and actuation of millimeter-scale robots for real-world applications. His research focuses on overcoming the fundamental challenges of miniaturization—namely, propulsion efficiency, maneuverability, and terrain adaptability. Xu’s major contributions include the development of a high-performance millimeter-scale crawling robot driven by a novel miniature electromagnetic linear actuator (MELA), which enables fast, controlled movement despite its tiny size. This work, published in 2024 and already garnering 12 citations, demonstrates potential for use in fault detection, disaster relief, and environmental monitoring. Building on this, Xu introduced a tree frog-inspired bionic foot design in 2025, creating a high-speed, maneuverable micro-robot capable of adapting to complex terrains—a critical advancement for emergency response scenarios where conventional tools are too large or inflexible.
