About

Tianshuo Yuan is a pioneering neuroscientist whose work bridges cutting-edge neuromodulation and nonhuman primate models of epilepsy. His research centers on deep brain stimulation (DBS) for temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), with a particular focus on the anterior nuclei of the thalamus (ANT) and its downstream effects on basal ganglia dysfunction. In his landmark 2020 study (25 citations), Yuan demonstrated that ANT-DBS alleviates basal ganglia abnormalities in monkeys with TLE, providing critical mechanistic insight into how thalamic stimulation disrupts seizure propagation circuits. To enable such precise interventions, he developed and validated robotic-assisted surgical techniques for lead implantation in nonhuman primates (2019, 17 citations), achieving unprecedented accuracy and reproducibility. Yuan also established a novel mesial TLE rhesus monkey model using robot-guided intra-hippocampal and intra-amygdala kainic acid injections (2019, 12 citations), creating a more clinically relevant platform for testing antiepileptic therapies. His work has been instrumental in translating DBS from basic circuit discovery to preclinical validation, earning recognition for its methodological rigor and translational potential. By combining advanced robotics, electrophysiology, and behavioral analysis, Yuan continues to shape our understanding of thalamocortical and basal ganglia dynamics in epilepsy, offering new hope for patients with drug-resistant seizures.
