About
Tiama Hamkins-Indik is a pioneering bioengineer whose work sits at the intersection of microfluidics, organ-on-chip technology, and automation. Her primary research focuses on developing robotic platforms to fluidically link multiple human organ chips, creating "body-on-chip" systems that more accurately model human physiology. Her most impactful contribution is the 2020 paper "Robotic fluidic coupling and interrogation of multiple vascularized organ chips," which has garnered over 400 citations. This work introduced a groundbreaking automated system for culturing, perfusing, and imaging up to ten interconnected Organ Chips simultaneously. Her earlier 2019 paper laid the foundation by describing the "Interrogator" instrument—a robotic platform integrating liquid handling, custom software, and a mobile microscope for automated experimentation. Hamkins-Indik's innovations dramatically enhance the throughput, reproducibility, and physiological relevance of organ-chip studies, enabling complex multi-organ interactions to be studied outside the body. Her work represents a critical step toward replacing animal models and accelerating drug development, making her a leading figure in the quest for more predictive human disease models.
