About
Tarek Al-Hammouri is a pioneering urologic surgeon whose research focuses on advancing minimally invasive surgical techniques for bladder and prostate cancers, with a particular emphasis on robotic-assisted procedures. His landmark 2022 study on robot-assisted radical cystectomy with intracorporeal urinary diversion, which has garnered over 320 citations, demonstrated comparable 90-day morbidity and mortality to open surgery, establishing a new standard for bladder cancer treatment. Al-Hammouri is perhaps best known for his leadership in the NeuroSAFE PROOF trial, a multicenter randomized phase 3 study evaluating real-time frozen section analysis during robot-assisted radical prostatectomy to preserve neurovascular bundles. This work, along with his development of the innovative LaserSAFE technique—which uses fluorescence confocal microscopy for intraoperative margin assessment—has significantly improved postoperative erectile function and urinary continence outcomes. His contributions to surgical precision and functional preservation have been recognized through multiple high-impact publications and ongoing feasibility studies. Al-Hammouri’s research continues to shape the future of urologic oncology by integrating advanced imaging technologies with robotic surgery to optimize oncologic control while minimizing patient morbidity.
