About
T.L. Calton is a robotics and automation researcher whose career has centered on the development of intelligent mechanical assembly planning systems, with a particular focus on bridging the gap between CAD-based design data and automated robotic manufacturing. Working primarily at Sandia National Laboratories, Calton made foundational contributions to the field through the Archimedes project, a pioneering effort to create systems capable of automatically generating assembly sequences directly from three-dimensional CAD models. The flagship achievement, Archimedes 2, integrated multiple planning modules, assembly sequence animation tools, and a functional robotic workcell, representing one of the most comprehensive second-generation assembly planning platforms of its era.
