About
Suyoung Chi is a robotics researcher whose work centers on human-robot interaction (HRI), with particular expertise in developing intuitive and perceptive robotic systems capable of engaging meaningfully with people. Chi's most recognized contribution is the Robot Photographer system (2006), which integrates stereo vision and wireless communication to enable a mobile robot to autonomously capture photographs by recognizing human gestures—earning 18 citations and demonstrating an early vision for socially aware robotics. Building on gesture recognition, Chi also explored visual game-based interaction through a rock-scissors-paper system using robotic cameras, addressing practical challenges such as camera angle distortion to advance nonverbal human-robot communication.
