Stuart Marshall is an observational astronomer whose work has significantly advanced our understanding of the outer Solar System. His primary research focuses on the detection and characterization of Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) through stellar occultations—a technique that measures the brief dimming of a star as a distant body passes in front of it. Marshall’s major contribution lies in the development and application of rigorous statistical methods for this purpose, most notably through the Taiwanese–American Occultation Survey (TAOS). As a key figure in this project, he helped design a system of robotic telescopes to monitor thousands of stars simultaneously, analyzing hundreds of millions of photometric measurements to identify rare occultation events.
