About
Simona Andrei is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on the long-range transport of aerosols and their impact on European air quality and climate. Her most influential work, the 2019 study "Multiyear Typology of Long-Range Transported Aerosols over Europe" (30 citations), represents a landmark contribution to aerosol remote sensing. In this study, Andrei synthesized over a decade of data (2008–2018) from 17 collocated AERONET and EARLINET stations across Europe, creating the first comprehensive multiyear typology of transported aerosol optical properties. By integrating ground-based lidar and sun photometer measurements, she characterized distinct aerosol types—including dust, marine, and anthropogenic pollution—and mapped their spatial and temporal distribution across the continent. This work has become an essential reference for understanding transboundary aerosol transport and validating satellite retrievals.
