About

Siddhartha Sikdar is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of biomedical engineering and human-machine interaction, whose work is redefining how we control assistive technologies. His primary research areas include sonomyography—the use of ultrasound imaging to sense muscle deformation—and the development of next-generation wearable robots and muscle-computer interfaces. Sikdar’s most significant contribution is his groundbreaking work on real-time classification of hand motions using ultrasound imaging of forearm muscles, a 2015 study that has garnered 159 citations. This paper challenged the dominance of surface electromyography (sEMG) by demonstrating that ultrasound can capture mechanical muscle activity with greater robustness, offering a new paradigm for myoelectric control of prostheses and rehabilitation robots. He has further extended this work to individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), as shown in his 2024 study (6 citations), where sonomyography-based interfaces enable hand function restoration. As editor of a 2022 special issue on user-adaptive wearable robots (6 citations), Sikdar is shaping the future of mobility augmentation. His research holds immense promise for creating more intuitive, adaptive, and accessible assistive devices for those with movement disorders.
