About
Shiyuan Dong is pioneering the next generation of smart surgical tools at the intersection of soft robotics and precision sensing. His research focuses on magnetic continuum robots and Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) force sensors, with the goal of making minimally invasive surgery (MIS) safer, more perceptive, and more autonomous. His most-cited work introduces a multifunctional magnetic catheter robot that integrates triaxial force sensing—a critical step toward giving surgeons real-time tactile feedback during delicate procedures. In a related study, he developed a high-precision miniature triaxial FBG force sensor capable of detecting and locating hard tissue anomalies, such as tumors, during robotic-assisted palpation. This work addresses a long-standing challenge in MIS: the loss of haptic feedback. With over 40 combined citations in just two years, Dong’s contributions are already shaping the field.
