About

Shiho Matsubayashi is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of ecoacoustics, bioacoustics, and robot audition technology, whose work has fundamentally advanced how scientists monitor and interpret bird vocalizations in natural environments. Best known for developing HARKBird — a portable acoustic monitoring system built on the open-source robot audition software HARK — Matsubayashi has created practical tools that enable precise localization, classification, and spatiotemporal analysis of birdsong using microphone arrays in the field. This system has been applied to studying species including great reed warblers, Japanese bush warblers, and the endangered Eurasian bittern, shedding light on intraspecific communication, soundscape ecology, and fine-scaled behavioral dynamics that were previously difficult to capture.
