About
Sheba Jarvis is a leading genetic epidemiologist whose work has fundamentally advanced the understanding of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), a serious liver disorder affecting pregnant women. Her research centers on the complex genetic architecture of pregnancy-related diseases, with a particular focus on how common genetic variations and rare mutations in bile acid transporter genes contribute to disease susceptibility. Jarvis’s landmark 2013 study, cited over 120 times, provided the first comprehensive analysis of genetic variation around six key candidate loci for ICP, including ABCB11 and ABCB4. This work systematically characterized how the common p.444A allele in ABCB11, alongside heterozygous mutations in canalicular transporters, creates a genetic predisposition for the condition.
