About

Samuel C. Barden is a pioneering astronomical instrumentation scientist whose career has been defined by advancing multi-object spectroscopy. His primary research focus is the design and construction of high-efficiency spectrographs for Galactic Archaeology, the study of our Milky Way’s formation and evolution through stellar chemistry and kinematics. Barden’s most significant contribution is his leadership in developing the High Efficiency and Resolution Multi-Element Spectrograph (HERMES) for the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). As detailed in his highly cited 2015 paper (93 citations), HERMES was purpose-built to power the GALAH survey, a landmark effort to unravel the history of the Galaxy by observing hundreds of thousands of stars. This work builds on his earlier innovations, including the Echidna fibre positioner, which dramatically increased the multiplexing capability of the AAT’s 2dF facility, and the pioneering robotic fibre actuator device (FAD) at Kitt Peak National Observatory. Through these contributions, Barden has enabled large-scale stellar surveys that are fundamentally reshaping our understanding of galaxy formation, leaving a lasting impact on observational astrophysics.
