About

Robert Patterson is a leading astronomical instrumentation scientist whose work has revolutionized our ability to study the cosmos. His primary research areas are Galactic Archaeology and galaxy evolution, achieved through the design and construction of cutting-edge spectrographs. Patterson’s most significant contribution is his leadership on the High Efficiency and Resolution Multi-Element Spectrograph (HERMES) for the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT), a facility-class instrument that powers the landmark GALAH survey. With his first-light paper on HERMES garnering 93 citations, this work enables the detailed chemical fingerprinting of millions of stars, allowing astronomers to reconstruct the Milky Way’s formation and evolution.
