About
S. C. Alfaro is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on mineral dust emissions, aerosol characterization, and air quality in arid and urban environments. A major contribution is the development of the Laboratoire Inter‐Universitaire des Systemes Atmospheriques (LISA) dust production model dataset, which improved estimates of vertical dust fluxes over Northern Africa, the Middle East, and East Asia by accounting for surface roughness and soil texture. This work, cited over 116 times, has been foundational for understanding dust emission dynamics. Alfaro also pioneered aerosol monitoring in megacities, notably deploying the first AERONET Sun photometer in Cairo during the Cairo Aerosol Characterization Experiment.
