About

Russell Cannon is an instrumental figure in the development of cutting-edge spectroscopic facilities for Galactic archaeology. His career is defined by pioneering work on multi-object spectroscopy at the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT), most notably through the revolutionary 2dF (Two-Degree Field) facility. This system, which equipped the AAT with 400 optical fibers for simultaneous observation, dramatically expanded the telescope’s survey capabilities and laid the groundwork for large-scale stellar and galactic mapping. Cannon’s most significant contribution, however, is the High Efficiency and Resolution Multi-Element Spectrograph (HERMES), a facility-class instrument designed specifically for Galactic Archaeology. As detailed in his highly cited 2015 paper (93 citations), HERMES enables the first systematic effort to reconstruct the Milky Way’s formation and evolution by analyzing the chemical and kinematic histories of its stars. Through these landmark instruments, Cannon has provided the astronomical community with the tools to answer fundamental questions about galaxy formation, cementing his legacy as a key architect of modern spectroscopic surveys.
