About
Qi-Yao Feng is a rising force in the field of soft robotics and smart materials, with a focused expertise in dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs)—often hailed as the closest synthetic analogue to biological muscle. Feng’s major contribution lies in engineering DEAs that simultaneously achieve large actuation strain and high output force under relatively low driving voltages, a long-standing challenge that has limited the practical deployment of these materials. Their 2024 paper on the subject, already garnering 10 citations, demonstrates a breakthrough in balancing compliance and power, enabling DEAs to deliver both the flexibility needed for soft grippers and the strength required for micro-robotic locomotion. This work positions Feng at the forefront of efforts to create high-performance artificial muscles for applications ranging from wearable sensors to autonomous soft robots. By addressing the fundamental trade-off between deformation and force output, Feng’s research not only advances the fundamental science of electroactive polymers but also accelerates the transition of DEAs from lab curiosities to real-world actuators. Their growing citation record reflects the immediate relevance of these findings to peers in materials science, mechanical engineering, and robotics.
