About

Pierre Nabat is a leading climate modeler whose research centers on the radiative impacts of natural and biomass-burning aerosols, with a particular focus on their interactions with clouds and climate. His major contributions include advancing the representation of smoke aerosols in regional climate models, as demonstrated in his highly cited 2019 study (64 citations) on the transport and optical properties of smoke over the southeast Atlantic Ocean during the ORACLES-2016 and LASIC experiments. This work was critical for understanding the direct radiative effect of absorbing aerosols above stratocumulus clouds. Nabat also played a key role in evaluating mineral dust cycles across multiple Earth system models in the CRESCENDO project (45 citations), providing a benchmark for natural aerosol simulations. More recently, he has pioneered the modeling of brown carbon aerosols—the light-absorbing fraction of organic aerosols from biomass burning—using the ARPEGE-Climat global climate model (32 citations), addressing a major uncertainty in climate forcing. His work is instrumental in bridging the gap between aerosol microphysics and large-scale climate dynamics, making him a vital contributor to the next generation of Earth system models.
