About
Philjun Kang is a leading innovator in sustainable printed electronics, whose work directly confronts the mounting crisis of electronic waste. His primary research focuses on developing biodegradable and recyclable conductive materials that can replace traditional heavy-metal-based inks. Kang’s most impactful contribution is the creation of a conductive ink with a fully circular life cycle, detailed in his highly cited 2022 paper (58 citations). This breakthrough formulation, using polycaprolactone (PCL) and conductive fillers, allows printed circuits to be easily broken down and the valuable components recovered, drastically reducing the environmental toxicity and energetic costs associated with e-waste. By demonstrating that high-performance electronics need not be permanent pollutants, Kang is pioneering a new paradigm for green manufacturing. His work has been recognized as a critical step toward a truly sustainable electronics industry, offering a viable path for everything from disposable sensors to IoT devices that can be composted at end-of-life rather than landfilled.
