About
Pengxi Wu is an emerging leader in the field of smart materials and tribology, with a research focus on stimuli-responsive hydrogels and advanced nanocomposites. Their most notable contribution involves pioneering the use of MXene nanosheets—a class of two-dimensional transition metal carbides—to engineer hydrogels with unprecedented functionalities. In their highly cited 2023 work, Wu achieved a breakthrough in near-infrared-light-mediated switchable friction regulation by developing MXene-based double network hydrogels. This innovation overcomes the critical challenge of poor MXene-hydrogel compatibility, enabling dynamic, on-demand control of surface friction using light. The work, which has already garnered 24 citations, demonstrates Wu’s ability to bridge materials chemistry and mechanical engineering, offering transformative potential for applications in soft robotics, adaptive coatings, and biomedical devices. By integrating MXene’s unique photothermal properties with hydrogel mechanics, Wu has opened new avenues for creating intelligent, responsive surfaces. Their research not only advances fundamental understanding of polymer-nanomaterial interactions but also provides a practical platform for next-generation, remotely controllable tribological systems.
