About

Olli T. Raitakari is a leading figure in cardiovascular epidemiology and metabolic phenotyping, whose work has fundamentally shaped our understanding of how early-life risk factors influence adult cardiometabolic health. He is best known for spearheading the landmark Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study, a prospective cohort that has followed thousands of participants from childhood into adulthood for over four decades. Raitakari’s major contributions include demonstrating that childhood obesity, elevated blood pressure, and dyslipidemia independently predict adult cardiovascular disease, providing critical evidence for the importance of primary prevention starting in youth. His research also advanced the field of metabolic profiling; his highly cited 2009 paper (641 citations) introduced a high-throughput serum NMR metabonomics platform that revolutionized cost-effective, holistic studies of systemic metabolism, enabling the simultaneous quantification of lipids, lipoproteins, and small metabolites. With over 700 publications and an h-index exceeding 100, Raitakari’s work has been instrumental in translating population-level metabolic data into actionable clinical insights, earning him international recognition and numerous awards for his contributions to preventive cardiology.
