About

Ningxin Zhou is a pioneering surgeon and researcher in robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery, with a particular focus on complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic procedures. His landmark 2011 study comparing pancreatoduodenectomy outcomes between robotic and open surgery—cited 136 times—demonstrated that the Da Vinci robotic system could achieve comparable results to traditional open surgery for one of the most challenging operations in general surgery. This work helped establish robotic surgery as a viable alternative for pancreatic cancer treatment. Zhou has also made significant contributions to the technical advancement of surgical robotics, including designing an integrated master-slave robotic system for minimally invasive surgery and developing direct manipulation tool-like masters to reduce system costs and shorten learning curves. His clinical innovations include performing the first robotic surgeries for hilar cholangiocarcinoma with deep jaundice, as well as robotic anatomic left hemihepatectomy with biliary reconstruction—procedures that push the boundaries of what is possible with robotic assistance.
