N. F. H. Tothill is a leading figure in Antarctic astronomy, specializing in the development of robotic observatories for extreme environments. His work focuses on enabling high-quality, unattended astronomical observations from the Antarctic plateau, a region offering exceptional atmospheric conditions for infrared and submillimeter astronomy. Tothill’s major contributions center on the design and deployment of the PLATO (PLATeau Observatory) robotic observatory, a fully self-contained system that generates its own electricity and heat, and maintains satellite communications in temperatures as low as -70°C.
