About
Mieko Ohsuga is a leading researcher in human factors, ergonomics, and human-robot interaction, with a focus on health promotion and educational support through technology. Her work bridges engineering and human behavior, aiming to improve quality of life through innovative systems. One of her key contributions is the proposal of a home-based physical activity promotion system that uses a robot to encourage exercise, addressing the challenge of sustaining voluntary physical activity. In a study with 16 male university students, she demonstrated that a physical robot’s prompting was more effective than a 2D image, using the Semantic Differential method to evaluate user impressions. More recently, Ohsuga has investigated telepresence robots for supporting school attendance among long-term ill or school-refusing students. Her 2022 study with six participants, including a hospitalized high school student, analyzed head and neck angles and gaze behavior during different class types, revealing that seated lectures induced significantly deeper head flexion (−20.4°) than exercises or breaks.
