About
Michael Koa-Wing is a pioneering cardiac electrophysiologist whose research has significantly advanced the field of robotic catheter ablation — a minimally invasive approach to treating dangerous heart rhythm disorders. Based at a leading UK cardiac centre, his work has focused on demonstrating the feasibility, precision, and clinical superiority of remotely controlled robotic systems for cardiac mapping and ablation procedures. His most celebrated contribution, a 2008 landmark paper accumulating 176 citations, documented the first human experiences with a novel remotely steerable catheter sheath, establishing robotic assistance as a viable and promising approach in electrophysiology. Building on this foundation, Koa-Wing systematically demonstrated that robotic manipulation produces superior catheter tip stability compared to conventional manual techniques, resulting in more effective radiofrequency energy delivery, greater tissue signal attenuation, and potentially more durable ablation lesions — findings critical for reducing arrhythmia recurrence. Notably, his work extended robotic ablation into complex patient populations, including those with congenital heart disease undergoing Rastelli repair, and ischemic ventricular tachycardia — some of the most technically challenging cases in clinical electrophysiology.
