Mengjie Zhang is a leading figure in evolutionary computation and its applications to complex real-world problems, particularly in image analysis, computer vision, and robotics. As a Professor at Victoria University of Wellington, his pioneering work has fundamentally advanced the use of genetic programming for automatic feature extraction and object detection, earning over 20,000 citations. Zhang’s major contributions include developing novel evolutionary algorithms that automatically design image filters and classifiers, significantly improving performance in tasks like face recognition and medical image analysis.
