About

Mattia Intra is a pioneering breast surgeon whose work has fundamentally reshaped the landscape of oncologic breast surgery, particularly through the integration of advanced technology. His research centers on two transformative areas: intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) and robotic-assisted mastectomy. In the early 2000s, Intra was instrumental in developing and validating the ELIOT technique (intraoperative radiation therapy with electrons), demonstrating in a seminal 2003 paper (136 citations) that delivering a single, concentrated dose of radiation directly to the tumor bed during surgery could effectively sterilize residual cancer cells, potentially sparing patients weeks of post-operative whole-breast irradiation. This work, alongside his preliminary 2001 report (283 citations), established a new paradigm for breast-conserving therapy. More recently, Intra has been a global leader in robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy. His 2016 feasibility study (178 citations) and a landmark 2021 randomized trial (100 citations) comparing robotic to open surgery have proven the technique’s safety, oncologic soundness, and superior cosmetic outcomes, offering patients a less invasive option with faster recovery. With over 800 citations across his most influential works, Intra’s legacy is one of bold, patient-centered innovation, bridging surgical precision with technological advancement to reduce the burden of breast cancer treatment.
