About

Alberto Luini is a pioneering figure in breast cancer surgery, best known for his transformative work in conservative and minimally invasive treatments. His research centers on intraoperative radiotherapy and robotic-assisted mastectomy, with the goal of reducing treatment burden while preserving oncological safety. Luini’s landmark 2001 study on intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) for limited-stage breast cancer, cited over 280 times, provided early evidence that targeted radiation during surgery could replace weeks of postoperative whole-breast irradiation. This work culminated in the development of the ELIOT technique (electron intraoperative radiotherapy), detailed in his 2003 paper (136 citations), which demonstrated that local recurrences could be controlled by irradiating only the tumor bed. More recently, Luini contributed to the evolution of robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy, co-authoring a 2015 study (165 citations) that showed this approach enables immediate implant reconstruction with excellent cosmetic outcomes.
