About

Massimo Bongiovanni is a leading head and neck surgical oncologist whose work has reshaped the management of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC). His primary research focuses on de-escalating treatment intensity through precision surgery, specifically using transoral robotic surgery (TORS). In his landmark 2017 prospective study, Bongiovanni demonstrated that by combining radiographic exclusion of extracapsular extension with intraoperative surgical margin revision, many patients could safely avoid adjuvant radiotherapy or chemoradiation. This paradigm-shifting approach, cited over 30 times, has helped spare countless patients from the severe long-term toxicities of aggressive multimodal therapy. His contributions have been instrumental in establishing TORS as a definitive, organ-preserving treatment for OPC, moving the field toward more personalized, risk-adapted care. Bongiovanni’s work continues to influence clinical guidelines and inspire further research into minimizing treatment morbidity while maintaining excellent oncologic outcomes.
