Lorenzo Flueckiger is a robotics researcher whose career spans the intersection of virtual reality interfaces, teleoperation, and autonomous systems for space exploration. Beginning in the mid-1990s, he pioneered the application of virtual reality as an intuitive control paradigm for robotic systems, developing generic kinematic frameworks that allowed operators to command complex manipulators and mobile robots through immersive interfaces — work that culminated in his most-cited paper on VR interfaces for remote vehicle visualization and control (2001, 93 citations). His research trajectory shifted toward planetary exploration robotics, particularly in preparation for NASA's lunar return ambitions. Through the Human-Robot Site Survey project, he investigated coordinated human-robot teams conducting terrain mapping and resource sampling on the Moon, validated through analog field experiments at Haughton Crater. He also contributed to the Mission Simulation Facility at NASA Ames, enabling distributed simulation environments for autonomy development, and helped establish the Service Oriented Robotic Architecture (SORA) through six years of rover field testing.
