About
Lily Chang is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of surgical robotics, minimally invasive surgery (MIS), and objective skill assessment. Her work has fundamentally advanced how surgical performance is measured and taught, moving the field away from subjective evaluation toward rigorous, data-driven methodologies. Chang's most influential contribution is her development and application of the BlueDRAGON system, a sophisticated platform for capturing the kinematics and dynamics of endoscopic surgical tools in vivo. This technology, introduced in a series of highly cited papers from 2002–2004 (collectively accumulating over 450 citations), enabled unprecedented precision in analyzing surgeon movements during laparoscopic procedures. Building on this foundation, her 2006 work modeling MIS as a stochastic Markov process (220 citations) provided a mathematically elegant framework for characterizing surgical performance across its complex, multidimensional components.
