About

Lilian Zhang is a pioneering researcher in bio-inspired robotics navigation, autonomous systems, and computer vision, whose work sits at the intersection of biological sensory mechanisms and cutting-edge engineering. Best known for her groundbreaking contributions to polarization-based navigation, Zhang drew inspiration from the remarkable orientation abilities of animals to develop novel camera-based polarization sensors capable of guiding autonomous vehicles and UAVs with exceptional reliability—work that earned her most-cited paper over 91 citations since 2016. Her subsequent development of integrated multi-sensor navigation systems, combining polarized skylight sensors with inertial measurement units and monocular cameras, demonstrated transformative potential for urban ground navigation in GNSS-denied environments, attracting a further 71 citations. Zhang has also advanced visual place recognition through deep learning approaches, including multiscale feature fusion with convolutional neural networks, and more recently pioneered pose-only solutions to large-scale 3D visual reconstruction. Her 2022 bio-inspired UAV navigation system elegantly unifies skylight compass technology with visual place recognition, reflecting the breadth and coherence of her research vision. With over 340 cumulative citations across ten significant publications, Zhang represents an influential voice in intelligent robotics, continually bridging natural biological intelligence with real-world autonomous systems.
