About

Kyu Eun Lee is a pioneering surgical oncologist whose work has fundamentally advanced the field of minimally invasive and robotic thyroid surgery. Best known for developing and refining the Bilateral Axillo-Breast Approach (BABA) robotic thyroidectomy technique, Lee's research has transformed how surgeons approach thyroid surgery by eliminating visible neck scarring while maintaining surgical completeness and oncological safety. His landmark 2009 paper introducing BABA robotic thyroidectomy with the da Vinci system has garnered 240 citations, and subsequent large-scale outcome studies — including a review of over 1,000 cases — have firmly established the technique's clinical credibility. Lee has also contributed to adrenal surgery through systematic reviews of laparoscopic and robotic adrenalectomy approaches, and pioneered the use of indocyanine green with Firefly® technology for intraoperative parathyroid localization. Notably, his 2020 work on deep learning-based surgical instrument tracking for evaluating robotic surgical skills represents a forward-thinking pivot into artificial intelligence applications in surgical training. With a body of work exceeding 1,000 cumulative citations, Lee's contributions span surgical technique, patient outcomes, cosmesis, and surgical education.
