About
Kostas Eleftheratos is an atmospheric scientist whose research centers on aerosol–radiation interactions, solar energy meteorology, and the development of novel retrieval algorithms for ground-based instrumentation. His most influential contribution is the creation of a pioneering algorithm that reprocesses direct-sun measurements from a MkIV Brewer spectrophotometer—originally designed for nitrogen dioxide retrievals—to derive aerosol optical depth (AOD) at ~440 nm. This work, published in 2016 and garnering 23 citations, established a new capability for long-term AOD monitoring in Athens, Greece, and has become a reference for Brewer-based aerosol studies. Eleftheratos has further advanced the field by quantifying the direct effect of aerosols on surface solar radiation components—Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI) and Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI)—using a synergy of CAMS reanalysis, satellite, and ground-based data. His 2022 and 2023 studies, focused on the Mediterranean Basin, demonstrate how aerosols significantly modulate solar resource availability, with direct implications for solar energy production and grid integration. By bridging atmospheric physics and renewable energy applications, Eleftheratos provides critical insights for optimizing solar power forecasting in aerosol-prone regions.
