About

Koji Isogai is a pioneering figure in computational fluid dynamics, best known for his groundbreaking work on the unsteady aerodynamics of insect flight. His primary research areas encompass bio-inspired flight mechanics, unsteady viscous flow simulation, and the application of three-dimensional Navier-Stokes codes to complex biological systems. Isogai’s most significant contribution is his seminal 2004 study on the hovering flight of the dragonfly (*Anax partheno*), where he performed the first detailed numerical simulations of the unsteady, three-dimensional viscous flow around a tandem wing configuration. This work, which has garnered over 55 citations, fundamentally clarified the basic aerodynamic mechanisms—such as leading-edge vortices and wake capture—that enable dragonflies to achieve exceptional lift and maneuverability at low speeds.
