About
Kazuhiro Nagata is a pioneering cell biologist whose research centers on the molecular chaperone HSP47 and its critical role in collagen biosynthesis and fibrotic diseases. His major contributions include elucidating how HSP47 functions as a collagen-specific chaperone essential for proper collagen folding and secretion, and demonstrating its involvement in pathological fibrosis. Nagata’s landmark 2004 study on diabetic nephropathy (53 citations) revealed that advanced glycation end products (AGEs) upregulate HSP47 in the kidney, and that inhibiting AGE formation with OPB-9195 suppresses HSP47 expression, thereby attenuating fibrosis. This work provided a mechanistic link between hyperglycemia, collagen accumulation, and diabetic complications. With over 10,000 total citations, Nagata’s research has profoundly impacted the understanding of collagen-related diseases, including fibrosis, cirrhosis, and scleroderma. He is also recognized for developing HSP47 as a therapeutic target, with his findings paving the way for novel anti-fibrotic strategies.
