About
Jun-Pyo Myong is a leading figure in the advancement of minimally invasive thyroid surgery, with a particular focus on the bilateral axillo-breast approach (BABA) for endoscopic and robotic procedures. His research has been instrumental in addressing critical postoperative quality-of-life concerns, most notably the sensory changes in the anterior chest and breast areas following these scarless surgeries. Through two highly cited prospective studies (2011 and 2013), accumulating over 65 citations, Myong provided the first systematic evidence on the recovery and extent of skin sensation after BABA, establishing benchmarks that have guided surgical technique and patient counseling. His work has demonstrated that while temporary sensory loss is common, significant recovery occurs over time, reassuring both surgeons and patients. Additionally, Myong pioneered the application of intraoperative neuromonitoring for the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve during robotic thyroidectomy, a preliminary study that has enhanced safety and voice preservation in these complex procedures. By rigorously evaluating functional outcomes alongside cosmetic and oncologic results, Myong has helped validate BABA as a safe, patient-centered option, shaping modern thyroid surgery standards.
