About
Jong Woo Chung is a leading researcher at the intersection of robotic surgery, computer vision, and otologic procedures. His work focuses on enhancing surgical precision and safety through intelligent automation and real-time video analysis. Chung’s most impactful contribution is his 2019 study on robust real-time detection of laparoscopic instruments using convolutional neural networks with motion vector prediction, which has garnered 63 citations. This work addresses a critical need in robot-assisted surgery: providing immediate, actionable feedback to prevent post-operative complications and improve operative performance. He has further advanced the field by applying deep learning to mastoidectomy, developing algorithms for the detection and segmentation of surgical tools and anatomical regions in video. His 2017 cadaver study on an image-guided human-robot collaborative control system for mastoidectomy demonstrated the feasibility of robot-assisted bone removal, showing improvements in duration, precision, and safety. Through these innovations, Chung is paving the way for safer, more effective surgical interventions, particularly in complex ear surgeries.
