About

John Saxton is a leading researcher in exercise oncology, with a primary focus on improving health outcomes for prostate cancer patients. His work centers on the critical role of physical activity and resistance training in mitigating the adverse effects of cancer treatments, particularly robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy. Saxton’s major contributions include demonstrating that supported, home-based progressive resistance exercise can effectively counter cardiovascular decline, preserve muscular strength, and enhance health-related quality of life in post-surgery patients. His 2021 randomised controlled trial (16 citations) provides pivotal evidence for integrating exercise into standard post-operative care. He has also been instrumental in characterising the prevalence of patient-reported fatigue and its impact on quality of life, as shown in his 2019 cross-sectional study (13 citations). Looking to the future, Saxton is pioneering the use of telehealth with his innovative TelePrehab trial, exploring the feasibility of home-based prehabilitation before surgery. This work positions him at the forefront of developing accessible, non-pharmacological interventions to support cancer patients throughout their treatment journey.
