About

John C. Priscu is a pioneering polar limnologist and astrobiologist whose work has fundamentally reshaped our understanding of life in extreme environments. His research focuses on the biogeochemistry and microbial ecology of permanently ice-covered Antarctic lakes, subglacial aquatic systems, and the search for life beyond Earth. Priscu’s major contributions include demonstrating that diverse microbial communities thrive in Antarctica’s subglacial lakes and ice sheets, challenging assumptions about the limits of life on Earth and informing the potential for life on icy moons like Europa and Enceladus. His high-resolution spatial data from autonomous underwater vehicles, such as the study of Lake Bonney’s physical limnology (26 citations), has provided unprecedented insights into these isolated ecosystems. Priscu also co-developed the Mars Immunoassay Life Detection Instrument (MILDI), a robotic tool for detecting biomolecules on other planets. With over 200 publications and thousands of citations, his work has been instrumental in advancing NASA’s astrobiology missions, including the search for life in subglacial Antarctic environments.
